Role specialisation Banknote Issuance and Circulation

Working time Full time

Place of work Frankfurt am Main, Germany

Closing date 11.01.2022

Your team

You will be part of the Issue and Circulation Section in the Cash Management Division of the Directorate Banknotes. Our Directorate creates the physical euro, not by storing or printing cash, but by steering the supply chain and processes that determine the lifecycle of euro banknotes.

The Issue and Circulation Section focuses on the policies governing the issuance of banknotes, in other words the transformation of printed paper into money. We coordinate this phase of the cash cycle and all subsequent phases, including transporting euro banknotes and putting them into circulation. We ensure that cash is made available to you.

The Section is seeking to recruit a Banknotes Analyst. In your role, you will be part of a team of around 15 members of staff responsible for:
  • analysing developments in the use of cash and carrying out research;
  • defining how euro banknotes are produced and distributed;
  • setting banknotes issuance policies to ensure the right conditions for cash supply;
  • coordinating the implementation of the ECB’s legal framework governing how euro banknotes must be handled by national central banks (NCBs), commercial banks and other relevant institutions, and developing and overseeing compliance with this framework;
  • maintaining our IT system that monitors the issuance, stock and circulation of euro banknotes and coins;
  • working closely with colleagues within the Directorate as well as Eurosystem NCBs.

The ECB is an inclusive employer and we strive to reflect the diversity of the population we serve. We encourage you to apply irrespective of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or other characteristics.

Your role

As a Banknotes Analyst in the Issue and Circulation Section you will:
  • form part of the team making banknotes available to retailers and the public via commercial banks;
  • contribute to policy files on banknotes management and the further development of the legal basis for banknote handling and processing;
  • analyse data to ensure a sound understanding of the demand for and supply of our currency within the Eurosystem;
  • support strategic discussions on how best to ensure cash is accessible and accepted;
  • assist with the preparation of documentation for the decision-making bodies, as well as reports and material being shared within Eurosystem working groups.

The position offers you excellent opportunities to understand the working methods of the ECB and the Eurosystem and to gain detailed insights into the banknotes field. You will be part of a multicultural team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on the lives of European citizens.

Qualifications, experience and skills

Essential:
  • a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in business administration, economics, finance, STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) or another relevant field (click here for details on degree equivalences);
  • in addition to the above, a minimum of one year of experience in banknotes issuance work;
  • a sound knowledge of the stakeholders involved in the cash cycle as well as the key processes;
  • practical experience in managing large volumes of data, especially on stocks and flows;
  • an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Desired:
  • hands-on experience of the IT system monitoring the issuance, stock and circulation of euro banknotes and coins – Currency Information System 2 (CIS2) – and its reporting tool;

You engage collaboratively with others. You pursue team goals and learn willingly from other people’s diverse perspectives. You signal any need for change by explaining it and proposing alternative solutions. You analyse complex information effectively and can evaluate different views to arrive at solutions. You know and anticipate stakeholder needs.

You are motivated to contribute to the ECB’s mission, to serve the citizens of the EU as a member of a public institution and to work with colleagues from all over Europe.

You are motivated to be part of our team and to develop and use your skills and competencies to achieve the objectives of this position.

We would be happy to discuss a part-time arrangement for this role.
