Your team

You will join the Capital Markets/Financial Structure Division in the Directorate General Monetary Policy.
Our Division is made up of approximately 30 people. We are responsible for analysing financial markets from a monetary policy perspective. We monitor, analyse and study the non-bank transmission of monetary policy, covering the term structure of interest rates, as well as sovereign bond, corporate bond and stock markets, and the financing structure of non-financial corporations. We help to prepare for decisions on the ECB’s key interest rates and non-standard monetary policy measures, and we analyse the impact that those decisions have on financial markets using quantitative models. We also contribute to internal reports and external publications on monetary policy and euro area financial markets.

The ECB is an inclusive employer and we strive to reflect the diversity of the population we serve. We encourage you to apply irrespective of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or other characteristics.

Your role

As a Research Analyst, you will:
  • work closely with our Division’s economists, research analysts and trainees, contributing to longer-term analytical projects (including the enhancement of analytical, graphical and econometric tools), as well as the day-to-day work of the Division;
  • work with financial, macroeconomic and microeconomic data, maintaining, updating and further developing the Division’s data infrastructure;
  • help to update charts and tables in regular internal and external reports and presentations (including reporting for members of the ECB’s Executive Board), in cooperation with other business areas across the ECB;
  • maintain and further develop the Division’s existing modelling infrastructure.

We are seeking candidates for this role who demonstrate the potential for growth, and we will support the selected candidate in their future development of the required knowledge, skills or competencies, for example via training opportunities.

We value a track record of diverse relevant experience gained through internal or external mobility and/or positions held prior to working at the ECB.

This position will offer excellent opportunities to enhance your quantitative skills, work on analytical tasks and collaborate with experienced central bank economists, while gaining first-hand experience of working on monetary policy issues.

We would be happy to discuss a part-time arrangement (from 50% to 100%) to allow you to pursue a PhD or other studies while working as a Research Analyst in our Division.
You will be part of a multicultural team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on the lives of European citizens.

Qualifications, experience and skills

Essential:
  • a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in economics, finance, econometrics, mathematics, statistics, data science or another relevant field (see How you can join us for details on degree equivalences);
  • in addition to the above, practical experience (e.g. gained through internships or traineeships) in relation to at least one of the following types of economic data: macroeconomic data, financial market data, firm-level data, survey data, transaction-level data, other microdata, or large datasets;
  • a solid background in econometrics (particularly as regards time series and/or panel data), statistics or data science;
  • practical experience with programming languages such as MATLAB, Python, R, Stata or SQL;
  • an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Desired:
  • a master’s degree in economics, finance, econometrics, mathematics, statistics, data science or another relevant field;
  • knowledge of financial markets, monetary policy or macroeconomics.

You engage collaboratively with others. You pursue team goals and learn willingly from other people’s diverse perspectives. You signal any need for change by explaining it and proposing alternative solutions. You analyse complex information effectively and can evaluate different views to arrive at solutions. You know and anticipate stakeholder needs.

You are motivated to contribute to the ECB’s mission, to serve the citizens of the EU as a member of a public institution and to work with colleagues from all over Europe.

You are motivated to be part of our team and to develop and use your skills and competencies to achieve the aims of this position.
