Your team

The International Policy Analysis Division in the Directorate General International and European Relations is seeking applicants for two Economist positions.

Our Division, which has around 25 members of staff, prepares policy positions, analysis and briefings on global exchange rates, capital markets and commodities in support of decision-making by the Governing Council of the ECB. We also prepare policy positions and conduct research on issues relating to the international monetary system, the international role of the euro, international aspects of the digitalisation of money, the impact that geopolitics has on global finance, international financial architecture, global capital flows, global financial spillovers and interlinkages, and international aspects of central bank policies. We are responsible for analysis relating to activities of the G7, the G20, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), and we support the ECB’s representation in those fora.

Your role

In your role as an Economist, you will, depending on your profile:
  • contribute to the analysis of exchange rates, commodity markets, international financial issues and/or global interlinkages; and/or
  • contribute and develop empirical/structural modelling tools in the Division’s r areas of competence; and/or
  • develop policy positions and carry out substantive research on issues relating to the international monetary and financial system and international aspects of the digitalisation of money; and/or
  • coordinate the preparation of analysis and briefings on issues relating to international fora, including G7, G20, IMF and BIS meetings;
  • contribute to ECB publications as well as to research publications.

Qualifications, experience and skills

Essential:
  • a master’s degree or equivalent in economics or another relevant field (see How you can join us for details on degree equivalences);
  • in addition to the above, a minimum of two years’ professional experience (not including work as a trainee or intern) in the analysis of global policy issues, global capital markets and/or international financial issues;
  • the ability to combine policy-oriented and analytical work, with a keen awareness of policy issues;
  • an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Desired:
  • an understanding of open-economy macroeconomics and international finance;
  • experience of applied empirical work, the application of econometric methods and/or structural modelling for the purposes of policy analysis.

Further information

The contracts offered will be short-term ESCB/IO, with each appointment being for 6 or 12 months as of the exact starting date of the selected person, extendable to up to 36 months. 
Candidates must have a contract of employment with their home institution for a period of at least one year beyond the duration of the ECB contract being offered.
