Your team

You will be part of the EU Institutions and Fora Division in the Directorate General International and European Relations. Our Directorate has about 120 staff preparing policy positions on European and global issues for the ECB/Eurosystem/European System of Central Banks.

We prepare the ECB’s policy positions and conduct analytical work on topical EU and global institutional and policy issues, often in close coordination with other ECB business areas. In particular, we work on policy dossiers linked to deepening the Economic and Monetary Union, such as strengthening its economic governance framework and completing the banking and capital markets unions. We also work on EU policy priorities that are relevant to the ECB’s tasks, including the digital euro, climate and energy policy and digital finance. In addition, we act as the primary contact vis-à-vis other EU institutions and coordinate activities related to the ECB’s accountability for central banking and supervisory tasks. This involves close interactions with the European Parliament. Our regular tasks include coordinating the ECB’s preparations for meetings of the European Council, the Eurogroup and the ECOFIN Council as well as their preparatory bodies.

In your role as Economist, you will join a team of about 20 members of staff responsible for engaging in policy and analytical work related to EU policies, European institutional and governance affairs and ECB accountability. The EU Institutions and Fora Division also maintains working relations with and monitors the activities of the EU institutions listed above. You will work closely with various business areas across the ECB.

The ECB is an inclusive employer and we strive to reflect the diversity of the population we serve. We encourage you to apply irrespective of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or other characteristics.

Your role

As an Economist, you will:
  • provide analytical input on the development of the ECB’s stance on policy issues covered by the Division;
  • prepare briefings, speeches, presentations, analytical notes and articles;
  • contribute to ECB publications and external communications;
  • coordinate the preparation of meetings in EU fora;
  • maintain relations with EU institutions and monitor their activities;
  • represent the ECB at a technical level at external meetings.

We are seeking candidates for this role who demonstrate the potential for growth, and we will support the selected candidates in their future development of the required knowledge, skills or competencies.

The position offers you excellent opportunities to work close to the frontline of policymaking in high-level EU fora and to deepen your understanding of EU policies and interinstitutional relations. We maintain a collaborative and dynamic working environment for interdisciplinary teams of highly motivated experts. You will be part of a multicultural and diverse team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on the lives of European citizens and help deliver the ECB’s mandate.

Qualifications, experience and skills

Essential:
  • a master’s degree or equivalent in economics, political science, international relations, finance or a related field (see How you can join us for details on degree equivalences);
  • in addition to the above, a minimum of two years’ professional experience (other than as a trainee or intern) in the field of public policy or economic/financial analysis;
  • a good understanding of economics, central banking, banking supervision and the foundations of the Economic and Monetary Union;
  • sound analytical skills, including experience in applied policy-relevant research projects;
  • very good written and verbal communication skills;
  • an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Desired:

  • a publication record in areas related to the Division’s fields of interest;
  • experience working on EU economic or financial policies at an EU or international organisation or central bank.

You engage collaboratively with others. You pursue team goals and learn willingly from other people’s diverse perspectives. You signal any need for change by explaining it and proposing alternative solutions. You analyse complex information effectively and can evaluate different views to arrive at solutions. You know and anticipate stakeholder needs.

You are motivated to be part of our team and to develop and use your skills and competencies to achieve the aims of this position.

You are motivated to contribute to the ECB’s mission, to serve the citizens of the EU as a member of a public institution and to work with colleagues from all over Europe.
