Working time Full time

Place of work Frankfurt am Main, Germany

Closing date 18.10.2022

Your team

You will be part of the Language Services Division in the Directorate General Communications. The Division has four sections and a Language Technology and Innovation unit. You will be working in the section that includes the Dutch, German, French, Italian and Spanish language units. We are responsible for providing the ECB with translations and linguistic expertise in the official languages of the EU, in close collaboration with the national central banks and the national supervisory authorities.

In your role as Principal Dutch Translator, you will be part of a team of two native speaker standard translators responsible for translating texts relating predominantly to monetary policy and banking supervision from English into Dutch. Your strong work ethic, can-do mentality, flexibility and good interpersonal skills will be essential to the work of this small team. You will also work closely with the ECB translators of other EU languages, and in collaboration with linguistic staff members and other experts at De Nederlandsche Bank and the Nationale Bank van België.

The ECB is an inclusive employer and we strive to reflect the diversity of the population we serve. We encourage you to apply irrespective of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or other characteristics.

Your role

As a Principal Dutch Translator you will:
  • translate texts from English into Dutch, revise translations into Dutch, edit texts drafted in Dutch and proofread texts destined for publication in Dutch, all this within the given, and often demanding, deadlines;
  • manage the translation workload of the unit in line with the Division’s priorities and outsourcing policy;
  • engage and collaborate with the Division’s external translation providers;
  • contribute to the development of the ECB’s existing database of multilingual terminology related to the European System of Central Banks and the Single Supervisory Mechanism by researching and compiling such terminology and by expanding translation memories in Dutch;
  • support the Division’s traineeship programme by mentoring Dutch trainee translators.

The position offers you excellent opportunities to follow developments in the translation industry (including language technology and machine translation), to focus on communication with the general public and experts in the field of central banking, and to contribute to a culture of collaboration and exchange. You will be part of a multicultural team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on the lives of European citizens.

Qualifications, experience and skills

Essential:
  • a master’s degree or equivalent in translation, applied linguistics, modern languages or another relevant field (see How you can join us for details on degree equivalences);
  • in addition to the above, a minimum of 16 years of professional experience as a translator working out of English into Dutch;
  • a mastery-level (C2) command of Dutch (native speaker standard);
  • experience in translating using computer-assisted translation tools, such as SDL Trados Studio, and an interest in machine translation;
  • a mastery-level (C2) command of English.

Desired:
  • an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages;
  • professional experience as a translator in the field of economics, finance or banking supervision;
  • experience of working as an in-house translator, preferably in a team, using well-defined and structured translation processes;
  • experience of working in an international environment.

You engage collaboratively with others. You pursue team goals and learn willingly from other people’s diverse perspectives. You signal any need for change by explaining it and proposing alternative solutions. You analyse complex information effectively and can evaluate different views to arrive at solutions. You know and anticipate stakeholder needs.

You are motivated to be part of our team and to develop and use your skills and competencies to achieve the aims of this position.
