Your team

You will be part of the Data Analytics Domain Services Division in the Directorate Information Systems. In the Directorate General Information Systems it’s our job to provide the European Central Bank (ECB) with the systems it needs to keep prices stable and safeguard the financial system.
We run and maintain more than 100 IT services, look after the ECB’s IT governance frameworks and develop frameworks for the Eurosystem/European System of Central Banks.
In Data Analytics Domain Services, we focus on delivering (big) data analytics systems, working closely with statisticians and economists across the institution.
You will join a team of six members of staff responsible for the Statistical Production and Compilation Environment (SPACE) project.
The ECB receives daily, monthly, quarterly and annual data on various economic indicators, processing more than 400 million time series spread across some 300 datasets. The SPACE project is using Python, R and Hadoop technologies to re-engineer more than 120 statistical business processes (e.g. aggregations, frequency conversions, data validation and quality checks) that have previously relied on a proprietary software using custom scripts written in a proprietary language.
SPACE is providing the ECB with more advanced analytics and aligning its statistical data production with modern data science technologies and platforms.
You will join the team that develops the data processes in Python or R, and will attend meetings, conduct analysis, advise on decisions, research and compile reports, work on pilots and test innovative solutions.
The ECB is an inclusive employer and we strive to reflect the diversity of the population we serve. We encourage you to apply irrespective of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or other characteristics.

Your role

As a data science trainee you will:
  • develop statistical data processes in Python;
  • develop statistical reports in R;
  • contribute to a constructive review of statistical data processes and improve statistical business processes;
  • participate in the definition of DataOps within the SPACE service;
  • present your implementation solutions to various audiences, including at managerial levels.

Working closely with the ECB’s statisticians and economists, you will have a unique opportunity to hone your skills in data science development using Python and R, while gaining knowledge about the financial and monetary statistics that help the ECB make informed decisions.
You will be part of a multicultural team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on the lives of European citizens.

Qualifications, experience and skills

Essential:
  • a bachelor’s degree or higher in data sciences, computer sciences, statistics or another relevant field;
  • a sound understanding of Python or R;
  • practical experience in development using high-level programming languages;
  • a sound theoretical background in statistics;
  • a good knowledge of the MS Office package;
  • an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Desired:
  • practical experience using source control software such as Git.

You are self-motivated, pursue projects and tasks with energy and drive, and have good problem-solving abilities and a genuine interest in finding better ways to do things.
You are curious and eager to learn, and want to further develop your ability to analyse complex information. You are keen to collaborate with others, pursue team goals and learn from other people’s diverse perspectives. You strive to know and anticipate stakeholder needs, and will signal any need for change and propose alternative solutions.
You are motivated to contribute to the ECB’s mission, to serve the citizens of the EU as a member of a public institution and to work with colleagues from all over Europe. You are keen to be part of our team and to use your skills and competencies to achieve the aims of this position.
