Your team

You will lead the Directorate General Economics (DG-E), which has 120 members of staff over five divisions.
 
Our Directorate General monitors, analyses, models and forecasts economic developments and policies; and prepares analytical studies, reports, policy positions and external communication on these issues, such as the Economic Bulletin and Occasional Paper Series. We provide policy advice and secretarial support for monetary policy meetings to the ECB’s decision-making bodies.

DG-E is responsible for the preparation and coordination of the ECB and Eurosystem staff forecasting processes. It contributes with economic studies to discussions on the further deepening of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) and represents the ECB in various European and international fora dealing with economic issues and policies.

Your role

As Director General Economics you will:

  • shape DG-E’s overall strategy, policies and analytical framework;
  • lead, together with the two Deputy Director Generals, the management of DG-E, which will include managing staff, medium-term business planning, budgeting, resource allocation and establishing work programmes, as well as regularly reviewing the progress of work;
  • ensure effective cooperation among the Directorate General’s five divisions and with other ECB business areas; 
  • develop the impact of DG-E’s work both within and outside the ECB;
  • contribute, as a member of the ECB’s senior management, to the development of the ECB’s strategic direction;
  • oversee and guide the preparation of strategic dossiers for the ECB’s decision-making bodies;
  • foster an optimal working atmosphere and an environment in which the management and staff of DG-E remain motivated, competent and committed to achieving established goals;
  • represent the Directorate General and the ECB by participating in and/or chairing a wide range of internal and external committees, working groups or high-level fora, and maintaining working contacts with relevant counterparts.

Qualifications, experience and skills

Essential: 
  • a master’s degree or equivalent in economics, finance, public policy, international relations or political science (click here for details on degree equivalences); 
  • in addition to the above, at least eight years of experience in managerial roles dealing with economic and monetary analysis, preferably at a central banking, European or international institution;
  • a sound understanding of the functioning of international and European institutions and fora;
  • extensive experience in leading and managing teams of highly qualified staff from diverse, preferably multinational backgrounds; 
  • a deep understanding of the working methods of the Eurosystem and the European System of Central Banks (ESCB) and other relevant European and international institutions;
  • an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages

Desired: 
  • a PhD and/or a publication record in a field of direct relevance to DG-E’s mission;
  • experience in acting as a representative in relation to international and/or European institutions and fora;
  • experience in leading management teams.
