Your team

You will be joining one of the following three Directorates General (DGs): 
  • Systemic and International Banks;
  • Universal and Diversified Institutions;
  • Specialised Institutions & LSIs.

Within ECB Banking Supervision these DGs are responsible for the ongoing supervision of significant institutions (SIs) and for overseeing the supervision of less significant institutions (LSIs). 

As a trainee you will be part of a dynamic international team of experts in one of the areas below.
  • Direct supervision of SIs as part of a Joint Supervisory Team (JST), composed of members from the ECB and the relevant national competent authority (NCA). The JSTs carry out the annual Supervisory Review and Evaluation Process (SREP) as well as many other supervisory tasks. 
  • Indirect supervision of LSIs as part of a country desk, also dealing with crisis cases. 
  • Horizontal banking supervision projects with the involvement of the DGs above.

Your role

As a trainee you will have the opportunity to: 
  • analyse financial accounts and monitor market perceptions of supervised banks;
  • analyse the legal and regulatory frameworks for financial institutions in various jurisdictions;
  • assist with collecting and analysing data and generating tables, charts and reports;
  • work independently, under the guidance of a mentor, on projects relating to the implementation of supervisory practices and standards.

Qualifications, experience and skills

Essential: 
  • a bachelor’s degree or higher in finance, economics, statistics, business administration, financial/banking law, accounting or a similar subject;
  • a keen interest in banking-related risk analysis and the implementation of financial regulation and supervisory standards and practices;
  • advanced knowledge of MS Office, particularly Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
  • an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Desired: 
  • a master’s degree in the subjects mentioned above;
  • knowledge of banking, banking regulation, corporate finance, risk management, statistical modelling or accounting;
  • knowledge of data management and analysis tools, including basic coding skills.

You are keen to collaborate with others, pursue team goals and learn from other people’s diverse perspectives. You strive to know and anticipate stakeholder needs and will signal any need for change and propose alternative solutions.

Working modalities

Playing a role in European banking supervision requires you to work in multinational and multicultural teams and in the context of different national frameworks. A strong ability to use different EU languages for business purposes is an asset.

Further information

Traineeships with an initial contract of 6 months, with the possibility of an extension up to 12 months in total in the same business area or another Directorate General within ECB Banking Supervision, subject to business needs and adequate performance.
