Your team

You will be part of the New Banknotes Section in the Directorate Banknotes. Our Directorate’s mission is to ensure the integrity of euro banknotes as an efficient means of payment and protect them against counterfeiting. The New Banknotes Section coordinates the development of new banknotes, from early research and development to the final banknote design.

The New Banknotes Section works together with third parties to ensure that our money remains secure and durable, and can easily be authenticated by citizens and automated devices, such as vending machines. It also develops new products and processes to improve the environmental sustainability of euro banknotes.

In your role as Trainee, you will be part of a team responsible for assessing the environmental impact of any change to the euro banknotes, working closely with the team in charge of the development of future new euro banknotes and the team responsible for the production of the current euro banknotes.

The ECB is an inclusive employer and we strive to reflect the diversity of the population we serve. We encourage you to apply irrespective of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or other characteristics.

Your role

As a Trainee focusing on environmental sustainability, you will:

  • develop models to assess the environmental impact of any variations in the design of euro banknotes, using the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) method developed by the European Commission;
  • develop process datasets compliant with the International Reference Life Cycle Data System entry-level requirements and with the Environmental Footprint requirements;
  • contribute to the compiling and processing of environmental data related to euro banknotes;
  • support other activities related to the development of new banknotes.

The position offers you excellent opportunities to work closely with experts on the development of new banknotes, including research and development on new technologies, and to apply the PEF methodology to the development of future euro banknotes. You will be part of a multicultural team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on the lives of European citizens.

You are keen to collaborate with others, pursue team goals and learn from other people’s diverse perspectives. You strive to know and anticipate stakeholder needs and will signal any need for change and propose alternative solutions.
