Your team
You will be part of the Language Services Division in the Directorate General Communications. We provide translation, editing, proofreading and terminology services in all EU languages to support the ECB’s communication activities and to help the ECB comply with its reporting obligations. We also offer advice on linguistic matters.
In your role as trainee translator in the Public Outreach Section, you will be part of a small team of Finnish translators working on a wide range of texts in the fields of central banking and banking supervision, including press releases, regular publications and reports, as well as content for our multilingual websites aimed at making the ECB’s work accessible to non-expert readers. You will work closely with other translators and editors, language technologists and workflow administrators, as well as, where relevant, with others in our Directorate General as part of cross-divisional teams handling strategic communication projects or urgent tasks. You will also work with experts from other ECB business areas.
The ECB is an inclusive employer and we strive to reflect the diversity of the population we serve. We encourage you to apply irrespective of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or other characteristics.
Your role
As a trainee translator you will:
- translate a wide array of texts in the fields of central banking and banking supervision from English into Finnish;
- proof-read texts written in Finnish;
- identify, extract and compile terminology in Finnish;
- contribute to other activities of the Finnish team, such as maintaining translation memories and providing linguistic and drafting advice as required.
The position offers you excellent opportunities to gain insight into the work of a language services division in an EU institution and to use state-of-the-art language technology tools. You will be part of a multicultural team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on the lives of European citizens.
Qualifications, experience and skills
Essential:
- a bachelor’s degree or higher in modern languages or translation;
- experience of translating English texts into Finnish, either as part of a degree course or in a professional context;
- a good knowledge of the MS Office package, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
- a native-speaker standard (C2) command of Finnish and an advanced (C1) command of English, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Desired:
- a master’s degree (completed or in the final stages of completion) in modern languages or translation;
- an intermediate (B1) command of another official EU language;
- familiarity with translation using computer-assisted translation tools such as Trados Studio and an interest in machine translation and language technology;
- a broad knowledge of European current affairs, with a particular interest in financial and economic matters.
You are curious and eager to learn, and want to further develop your ability to analyse complex information. You are keen to collaborate with others, pursue team goals and learn from other people’s diverse perspectives. You strive to know and anticipate stakeholder needs, and will signal any need for change and propose alternative solutions.
You are motivated to contribute to the ECB’s mission, to serve the citizens of the EU as a member of a public institution and to work with colleagues from all over Europe. You are keen to be part of our team and to use your skills and competencies to achieve the aims of this position.
