Your team
The supervisory technology (suptech) traineeship programme is an opportunity to join the suptech team of the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM). We are a growing team responsible for driving the digital agenda of European banking supervision by fostering a digital culture and delivering new supervisory tools and technologies. As part of the programme, you will benefit from mentoring by an experienced team member and tailored training opportunities.
We are looking for trainees to join either the Technology and Innovation Division in the Directorate General SSM Governance and Operations (the suptech business function) or the Prudential Domain Services Division in the Directorate General Information Systems (the suptech IT delivery function).
The SSM is the system of banking supervision in Europe. It comprises the ECB and the national supervisory authorities of the participating countries.
The ECB is an inclusive employer, and we strive to reflect the diversity of the population we serve. We encourage you to apply irrespective of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or other characteristics.
Your role
This traineeship programme is an excellent opportunity to gain experience of European banking supervision and interact with stakeholders in various business functions and authorities across Europe. You will have a unique opportunity to help shape the “next big thing” in banking supervision and apply emerging technologies to real-world problems. You will collaborate with leading experts in the field and help drive innovation across European banking supervision.
As a trainee, you will – depending on your skills and qualifications – have the opportunity to:
- innovate – apply state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to generate insights from prudential information and enhance banking supervision processes;
- implement – put your programming skills into practice, helping us to accelerate our transition to the cloud and take our applications to the next level;
- deliver – become a trusted expert by translating business requirements into technical solutions, steering innovation from ideation through to user adoption;
- analyse – use state-of-the-art data analytics and machine learning to generate insights based on big data from supervision and monitor the success of the solutions implemented;
- disrupt – help to advance European banking supervision’s digital agenda, challenging the status quo and suggesting improvements that transform not just the ECB but the entire European supervisory landscape;
- network – collaborate with strategic partners and counterparts in supervisory authorities and other organisations, including start-ups and academic institutions;
- learn – take part in workshops, conferences and tailored training courses while also benefiting from mentoring and regular feedback from an experienced team member.
You will be part of a multicultural team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on banking supervision and the lives of European citizens.
Qualifications, experience and skills
Essential:
- a bachelor’s degree or higher in business administration, economics, information systems, computer science, data science or another relevant field;

- strong presentation skills;
- a good knowledge of the MS Office package;
- an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Desired for traineeships in both Divisions:
- a master’s degree or equivalent in business administration, economics, information systems, computer science, data science or another relevant field;
- experience of working with multiple stakeholders in a project-based environment in which various tasks and processes are handled simultaneously;
- the ability to analyse complex processes, solve problems and present solutions in a meaningful and engaging way.
Desired for traineeships in the Technology and Innovation Division (business function):
- experience of financial analysis, banking supervision or related fields;
- university-level training and/or applied knowledge in the area of data science, econometrics or big data.

- experience of at least one major programming language (e.g. Python, HTML, CSS or Java);
- experience of building applications using cloud technology;
- experience of working with databases and SQL;
- experience of software development or a related field.
You are curious and eager to learn and want to further develop your ability to analyse complex information. You are keen to collaborate with others, pursue team goals and learn from other people’s diverse perspectives. You strive to know and anticipate stakeholder needs and will signal any need for change and propose alternative solutions.
You are motivated to contribute to the ECB’s mission, to serve the citizens of the EU as a member of a public institution and to work with colleagues from all over Europe. You are keen to be part of our team and to use your skills and competencies to achieve the aims of this position.
Working modalities
Playing a role in European banking supervision entails collaborating in multinational and multicultural teams and operating in the context of different national frameworks, for which a strong ability to use different EU languages for business purposes is an asset.
