Your team

You will be part of the Banking Supervision Data Division or the Securities and Financial Markets Data Division in the Directorate General Statistics. Our Directorate General has over 300 staff and aims to strengthen Europe by supporting ECB decision-making with high-quality data and statistics.

In your role as a Supervision Analyst in the Banking Supervision Data Division, you will be part of a team of ten members of staff responsible for collecting, processing, quality checking and disseminating supervisory data from credit institutions. This includes data that are required under the European Banking Authority’s Implementing Technical Standards on supervisory reporting as well as data requested by ECB Banking Supervision. We also create and maintain several risk dashboards for the Single Supervisory Mechanism. We define and calculate key risk indicators and publish aggregated and bank-level supervisory data, including quarterly supervisory banking statistics  . You will work closely with colleagues from ECB Banking Supervision, national competent authorities and the European Banking Authority.

In your role as a Data Science Analyst in the Securities and Financial Markets Data Division, you will be part of a team of six members of staff responsible for collecting, processing, transforming, quality checking and disseminating granular daily and high-frequency intraday data from commercial market data providers. The team also calculates and publishes derived financial market indicators and works closely with IT experts to maintain and develop the system containing high frequency financial markets data  . You will work closely with colleagues in risk management, market operations, monetary policy, European banking supervision  , economics and financial stability.

Your role

As a Supervision Analyst in the Banking Supervision Data Division you will:

  • maintain  databases and information sources by gathering supervisory data and information, and monitoring data quality;
  • provide technical input for developing frameworks, standards and policies, while focusing on supervisory reporting by conducting research and analysing input;
  • help update and maintain the quality framework for supervisory data;
  • improve supervisory databases and applications by developing and testing system capabilities and analytical tools and by identifying and solving issues;
  • maintain the list of key risk indicators and strengthen the technical infrastructure for calculating and disseminating data;
  • develop and maintain risk dashboards for ECB Banking Supervision colleagues;
  • enhance and help automate dashboard production processes;
  • produce and publish quarterly and ad hoc aggregated supervisory banking statistics on significant and less significant institutions.

As a Data Science Analyst in the Securities and Financial Markets Data Division you will:

  • manage the efficient reception, processing, quality checking and dissemination of derived indicators and data, including real-time high-frequency market data;
  • help develop, maintain and test the respective IT systems and associated software, using pipelines and tools for version control and collaboration features;
  • help design and implement new datasets and derived financial market indicators;
  • develop, implement and automate procedures for data quality management, including outlier detection and pattern recognition;
  • support and interact with data providers and end users across the ECB, the Eurosystem and other international organisations;
  • manage data, knowledge and information to ensure they are shared effectively.

Qualifications, experience and skills

Essential criteria :

  • a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in statistics, economics, banking, finance, business administration, data science, computer science or another relevant field (see How you can join us for details on degree equivalences);
  • in addition to the above, at least one year's professional experience working in data management in the field of statistics, financial analysis, risk management, market operations or supervision, including extracting and transforming data to create derived data or validating data to ensure they are fit for purpose;     
  • strong programming skills, particularly in Python as well as in either R or SQL, and proven experience of applying these skills to business processes;
  • a proven ability to analyse and interpret complex data sets and summarise and present results;
  • an advanced (C1)  command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Desired criteria for all roles:

  • experience using tools for managing the software development and testing processes in the deployment of IT systems;
  • good knowledge of databases, data integration and automation;
  • experience with data visualisation and/or tools such as Tableau, Shiny for R, Streamlit or Power BI.

Desired criteria for the Supervision Analyst role in the Banking Supervision Data Division:

  • a good understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the authorities forming the European System of Financial Supervision;
  • knowledge of the supervisory reporting framework applicable to EU credit institutions (e.g. the European Banking Authority’s Implementing Technical Standards).

Desired criteria for the Data Science Analyst role in the Securities and Financial Markets Data Division:

  • sound understanding and experience of working with financial markets and instruments, ideally managing high-frequency market data and systems;
  • experience using data from market data vendors such as Bloomberg or LSEG (formerly Refinitiv/Thomson Reuters).

Further information

The formal title for the position in the Securities and Financial Markets Data Division will be Research Analyst.

The contracts offered will be fixed-term, with the appointment lasting until approximately the end of January 2027. 

Temporary appointments may be extended or made permanent subject to organisational needs and budgetary constraints. This may result in a staff member with a non-convertible fixed-term contract being offered a convertible contract in accordance with the ECB Conditions of Employment.
