Working time Full time

Place of work Frankfurt am Main, Germany

Closing date 11.04.2022

Your team

You will be part of the External Developments Division in the Directorate International and European Relations. Our Division has 28 staff in charge of monitoring, analysing and forecasting macroeconomic developments in non-EU countries as well as in the global economy. Currently, we are working on understanding several key international macroeconomic developments relating to the ongoing pandemic, such as the persistence of supply bottlenecks, the tightness of labour markets in key advanced economies, and the quantification of international spillovers from policy decisions in systemically important non-EU economies like the US and China, to name just a few.

In your role as Economist, you will join a small team of experts and will be mainly responsible for the conduct of analytical studies of the global macroeconomic environment that feed into the Division’s reporting on the global economy and trade. The role also includes responsibilities for the design of international macroeconomic scenarios for in-house stress testing exercises (working primarily with colleagues in DG-MF).

The ECB is an inclusive employer and we strive to reflect the diversity of the population we serve. We encourage you to apply irrespective of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or other characteristics.

Your role

As a Senior Economist you will:

  • contribute to the empirical analysis of international macroeconomic policy issues relevant to the euro area, including international trade;
  • contribute to the development of econometric tools and models used to support global economic analyses and short-term forecasting;
  • develop the international macroeconomic scenarios underpinning the conduct of internal stress testing exercises;
  • participate in and present to meetings where analytical findings, forecasts and policy scenarios are discussed;
  • prepare briefing materials and presentations for internal and international meetings;
  • provide input to the ECB’s official publications (Economic Bulletin, Annual Report and Financial Stability Report).

The position offers you excellent opportunities to undertake topical policy analysis that directly supports the monetary policy decision process, use and develop global models to quantify risk scenarios for the global economic and trade outlook. You will be part of a multicultural team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on the lives of European citizens.

Qualifications, experience and skills

Essential:

  • a master’s degree or equivalent in economics, applied econometrics or another relevant field (click here for details on degree equivalences);
  • a minimum of seven years’ experience as an economist working on empirical macroeconomic analysis, forecasting and policy simulations, preferably acquired within a policy advice-oriented environment, e.g. central banks, international organisations, etc.
  • proven experience in preparing policy-oriented briefings;
  • a sound macroeconomic background for understanding economic and financial developments at the global and country levels;
  • advanced theoretical and empirical knowledge of statistical and econometric methods, especially time series analysis;
  • excellent drafting skills;
  • strong communications skills, including the ability to present complex analytical and policy issues in non-technical terms;
  • an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Desired:

  • a PhD in economics, econometrics or a related field;
  • sound experience of the modelling and analysis of topics related to (de) globalisation, especially international trade, trade policy issues and global production networks.

You engage collaboratively with others. You pursue team goals and learn willingly from other people’s diverse perspectives. You signal any need for change by explaining it and proposing alternative solutions. You analyse complex information effectively and can evaluate different views to arrive at solutions. You know and anticipate stakeholder needs. You are skilled at encouraging people to develop their abilities and are able to build up high-performing teams.

You are motivated to be part of our team and to use your skills and competencies to achieve the objectives of this position.
You are aware of your strengths and areas for development and know what motivates you to perform at your highest level.
