Your team

You will be part of the Metadata Management team in the Master- and Metadata Section of the Analytical Credit and Master Data Division, which forms part of the Directorate General Statistics of the European Central Bank (ECB).

The Metadata Management team plays a crucial role in supporting the European System of Central Banks (ESCB) and Europe integrated reporting, as well as the ECB’s internal metadata management and data integration. The team is responsible for the Banks’ Integrated Reporting Dictionary (BIRD) and the Single Data Dictionary (SDD). It is also actively involved in the ESCB’s Integrated Reporting Framework project, contributes to data integration through the Joint Bank Reporting Committee (JBRC), and works closely with national central banks, European supervisory authorities and the banking industry enlarge.

For this position, we are seeking a candidate to support the further development of the SDD. Your contribution to the team’s main tasks will be based on your skills profile, the team’s needs and your personal interests.

Your role

As a Senior Data Science Analyst you will:
  • contribute to the ongoing development and improvement of the SDD and the related BIRD website by supporting the entire development cycle, from assessing requirements, formulating development requests and working with IT developers to final testing and acceptance;
  • provide guidance and support for users on the functionality and content of the SDD and the BIRD website;
  • update the metadata (SDD content) in line with the agreed priorities;
  • develop and maintain a series of scripts and utilities to manage content on the BIRD website and in the SDD, in addition to helping to improve internal procedures;
  • participate in different internal or external fora where the SDD is used, e.g. via the different BIRD sub-groups and BIRD-related projects.

Qualifications, experience and skills

Essential:

  • a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in statistics, economics, mathematics, physics, engineering or another relevant field (see How you can join us for details on degree equivalences);
  • in addition to the above, seven years’ experience in data modelling for databases or data systems (e.g. using entity relationship data models) and in leveraging various data system technologies;
  • excellent programming skills and a thorough understanding of SQL, as well as experience using object-oriented programming languages such as Python and Java;
  • an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Desired:

  • a sound understanding of metadata management used in business processes;
  • experience in the design and development of user interfaces and/or user experiences (UX/UI);
  • a sound knowledge of financial and risk data (e.g. FIRNEP, COREP);
  • experience in testing IT applications;
  • good communication and drafting skills and experience in collaborating with multiple parties, e.g., IT counterparts on development work and other international organisations.

Further information

The contract(s) offered will be short-term ESCB/IO, the appointment being for 12 months as of the exact starting date of the selected person, extendable to up to 36 months. Candidates must have a contract of employment with their home institution for a period of at least one year beyond the duration of the ECB contract being offered.
