Your team

You will be part of the Business Cycle Analysis Division in the Directorate General Economics. We analyse and forecast aggregate and sectoral real macroeconomic developments in the euro area and its largest countries. This includes business cycle monitoring, short-term forecasting, the main components of domestic demand, risk analysis and the economic outlook. We also assess the euro area accounts and prepare external communications on business cycle developments. Our output includes articles and studies in ECB publications such as the Economic Bulletin, Annual Report, Occasional Paper Series and Working Paper Series.

In your role as Research Analyst, you will be part of the Consumer Expectations Survey team, which is currently conducting a pilot survey on households’ economic and financial behaviour, supporting survey design, developing computer code and undertaking model evaluation. There will also be scope to work on research projects. This involves working closely with the project managers and survey team members at the ECB, as well as interacting with experts in other central banks and with the external survey provider.

Your role

As a Research Analyst you will:

  • contribute to the Consumer Expectations Survey products and processes, in particular by organising and visualising complex household survey data;
  • set up and run statistical and econometric procedures;
  • work on the design and evaluation of survey questions;
  • participate in the development and maintenance of analytical infrastructure;
  • help to prepare internal and external reports and publications;
  • contribute to research projects.

Qualifications, experience and skills

Essential:
  • a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in economics or statistics or another relevant field (click here for details on degree equivalences);
  • a minimum of two years’ experience in analysing household survey data;
  • a minimum of three years’ experience with statistical software such as Stata or R;
  • a sound understanding of the economic issues related to the household sector (e.g. consumption, household finance, labour markets, housing markets);
  • experience in designing and evaluating new survey questions;
  • an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Desired
  • master’s degree or equivalent in economics or statistics or another relevant field, as well as a broad knowledge of macroeconomics;
  • experience in using household survey data in the context of policy analysis;
  • an interest in conducting economic research using household survey data.

Temporary appointments may be extended or made permanent subject to organisational needs and budgetary constraints. This may result in a staff member with a non-convertible fixed-term contract being offered a convertible contract in accordance with the ECB Conditions of Employment.
