Your team

You will be part of the Financial Research Division in the Directorate General Research (DG/R). Our Division has around 25 staff who conduct policy-relevant research on financial and monetary economics. Our output includes articles in top-ranked academic journals and ECB publications such as the Working Paper Series and the Research Bulletin. Based on their research, staff also prepare policy notes and reports for the ECB’s decision-making bodies, other ECB business areas and external audiences. Our current research agenda includes topical issues such as macro-financial linkages, the interaction between monetary and macroprudential policies, financial innovations such as fintech and digital currencies, and the financial aspects of climate change.

The ECB is an inclusive employer and we strive to reflect the diversity of the population we serve. We encourage you to apply irrespective of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or other characteristics.

Your role

As a Research Analyst, you will:
  • provide data-related statistical support to a wide range of research projects;
  • coordinate the activities of seven trainees who will support research projects alongside you;
  • run the annual recruitment campaign for new trainees in cooperation with the Division’s management;
  • develop and/or maintain several large micro-databases available to all DG/R staff;
  • advance your skills in writing statistical and econometric code in the software packages we use (primarily STATA and Matlab, as well as Python and R to a lesser degree).

We are seeking candidates for this role who demonstrate the potential for growth. This position offers excellent opportunities to develop the knowledge and skills required to contribute to world-class policy-relevant research. Therefore, the position is an ideal starting point for research-oriented candidates who wish to pursue a PhD in economics, finance or econometrics at the end of the initial three-year contract period.
You will be part of a multicultural team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on the lives of European citizens.

  • advanced programming skills related to the manipulation and econometric analysis of micro and time series data in Stata and MATLAB; in addition, at least intermediate programming skills in Python and/or R;
  • practical experience in working with large multidimensional micro datasets such as the balance sheet data of individual financial institutions and/or securities transaction-level data;
  • advanced working knowledge of at least two of the following databases/providers: Bloomberg, Thomson Reuters Eikon, Bureau van Dijk, Fitch Connect, SNL Financial, Dealogic or Bankscope;
  • an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
