Your team

You will be part of the Financial Research Division in the Directorate General Research. Our Division has around 30 staff who conduct research on monetary policy implementation and transmission, financial institutions and markets, and financial stability and regulation, among other topics. They provide research-based policy advice to the ECB’s governing bodies and other business areas, share their latest findings in seminars and at conferences and publish their work in academic journals. Our current research topics include financial stability considerations for monetary policy, the role of non-banks and financial technologies, climate finance and international financial linkages.

The ECB is an inclusive employer and we strive to reflect the diversity of the population we serve. We encourage you to apply irrespective of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or other characteristics.

Your role

As a Research Adviser you will:
  • conduct state-of-the-art research that helps to address key central bank policy issues and is ultimately published in top academic journals, and contribute to the intellectual leadership of the ECB within the global central bank-related research community;
  • contribute to the Division’s role as a valued source of policy advice within the ECB, the Eurosystem and the European System of Central Banks and advise on the planning, coordination and execution of policy-related research within the Division;
  • lead research teams and support staff in developing their capabilities in the field of financial research;
  • foster collaboration with internal and external counterparts, particularly within the ECB, the research community, other central banks, policy institutions and think tanks;
  • take an active role in the Division’s management team.

For this role we are seeking candidates who demonstrate the potential for growth, and we will support the selected candidate in their development of the required skills.

The position offers you excellent opportunities to develop your research agenda, mentor more junior colleagues and contribute, together with our management, to the reputation of our Directorate General. You will be part of a multicultural team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on the lives of European citizens.

Qualifications, experience and skills

Essential:
  • a PhD in economics, finance or another relevant field (see How you can join us for details on degree equivalences);
  • in addition to the above, a minimum of seven years’ professional experience in financial economics, monetary economics, international finance or econometrics;
  • publications in top economics and/or finance journals in the areas of monetary policy implementation and transmission, financial institutions and markets, financial stability and regulation, financial technologies, and/or international financial linkages;
  • at least two years’ professional experience in leading research projects and/or teams, and in overseeing research activities;
  • experience in providing policy advice, including drawing on research results and analytical models and effectively processing research-based policy work;
  • excellent communication skills, including a proven aptitude for presenting research results effectively to different audiences and in non-technical terms;
  • an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

You engage collaboratively with others. You pursue team goals and can draw on the strengths of a diverse team to get the best results. You support the efforts of team members to develop their abilities and are able to build up high-performing teams. You facilitate change and can articulate strategic priorities and scenarios for your team.

You are highly motivated to guide teams in their daily work and support their professional development.
You are aware of your strengths and areas for development and know what motivates you to perform at your highest level.
