Your team

You will be part of the Public Communication Division in the Directorate General Communications. Our Directorate General has approximately 200 staff communicating with the public and media about  the ECB’s work and views. We manage digital communications, media relations and public affairs, and also lead the ECB’s efforts to engage effectively with staff. We are currently working on making the ECB more accessible to different audiences and reaching out to the general public directly, using the bank’s social media channels and websites.

In your role as Public Outreach Specialist, you will be part of the External Engagement team, which consists of around ten members of staff responsible for engaging with non-expert audiences, especially civil society representatives and young people. The team also builds and strengthens relationships with influential individuals and organisations, who can act as multipliers at the national and European level. You will work closely with other business areas at the ECB and external stakeholders.

The ECB is an inclusive employer and we strive to reflect the diversity of the population we serve. We encourage you to apply irrespective of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or other characteristics.

Your role

As a Public Outreach Specialist you will:
  • help create a compelling narrative enabling civil society organisations and the general public to gain a better understanding of the impact of the ECB’s core tasks;
  • organise large-scale communications initiatives using established project management methodologies and tools;
  • draft briefings and speaking notes for the speaking engagements of ECB policymakers;
  • coordinate physical or virtual events for the ECB, focusing on dialogue with civil society organisations and the general public;
  • support the organisation of youth activities, such as the final Generation €uro Students’ Award and the Young Economist Prize;
  • develop communications plans, draft content for the ECB’s website and evaluate communications activities.

The position offers you excellent opportunities to help shape the ECB’s external engagement activities and forge contacts with influential stakeholders and key decision-makers. You will be part of a multicultural team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on the lives of European citizens.

  • in addition to the above, a minimum of three and ideally five or more years of proven experience in implementing innovative communications initiatives for the general public or developing relationships with civil society organisations;
  • excellent project management skills and a proven ability to handle large-scale projects;
  • excellent presentation and drafting skills, and a track record of creating successful communications deliverables on central banking/banking supervision for the general public, in particular younger audiences;
  • the ability to write clear, concise and relatable messages for digital content, speaking notes, briefings and reports;
  • the ability to present complex data to different audiences;
  • a clear understanding of the mission, tasks and responsibilities of the ECB and an understanding of communications issues pertaining to them;
  • an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU (ideally French or German), according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Desired:
  • proven knowledge and understanding of economics, including central banking and/or banking supervision, and European affairs;
  • knowledge of MS Project and the social media monitoring tool Talkwalker.

You engage collaboratively with others. You pursue team goals and learn willingly from other people’s diverse perspectives. You signal any need for change by explaining it and proposing alternative solutions. You analyse complex information effectively and can evaluate different views to arrive at solutions. You know and anticipate stakeholder needs.

You are motivated to be part of our team and to develop and use your skills and competencies to achieve the objectives of this position.
