Your team
You will be part of the Directorate General Research. Our Directorate General has around 60 staff. Our main responsibilities are to conduct research in monetary and international economics, financial intermediation and financial markets, macroeconomics, labour economics, macro-econometrics and the economics of climate change. We also provide research-based policy advice in these areas, applying conceptual frameworks and macro-econometric models for policy analysis.
The ECB is an inclusive employer and we strive to reflect the diversity of the population we serve. We encourage you to apply irrespective of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or other characteristics.
Your role
As a Principal Research Economist you will:
- conduct and publish high-quality research on policy-relevant issues in monetary economics, financial economics or macroeconomics;
- present your research at leading conferences worldwide, maintain a network and collaborate with other researchers in academia and at central banks;
- provide research-based policy advice, which may involve developing new models and tools;
- lead research teams and mentor more junior colleagues.
We are seeking candidates for this role who demonstrate the potential for growth, and we will support the selected candidate in their future development of the required knowledge, skills or competencies.
We value a track record of diverse relevant experience gained through internal or external mobility and/or positions held prior to working at the ECB.
The position offers you significant research time and an excellent research environment, including research assistance, state-of-the-art computing facilities, access to extensive data, regular interaction with academic consultants and interactive workshops and seminars. The ECB’s economists conduct cutting-edge research published in peer-reviewed journals and contribute substantively to policy analyses used by our institution’s Executive Board and Governing Council. You will be part of a multicultural team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on the lives of European citizens.
Qualifications, experience and skills
Essential:
- a PhD in economics, finance or another relevant field (see How you can join us for details on degree equivalences);
- in addition to your PhD, a minimum of 12 years’ relevant professional experience (other than as a trainee or intern) in academia, think tanks, central banks, governmental or international institutions;
- a publication record comprising papers published in high-quality peer-reviewed academic journals, plus an active research pipeline;
- international recognition of your research as evidenced, for instance, by presentations at high-level conferences and citations of your work;
- excellent communication skills, including the ability to present research results in non-technical terms;
- an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
You engage collaboratively with others. You pursue team goals and learn willingly from other people’s diverse perspectives. You signal any need for change by explaining it and proposing alternative solutions. You analyse complex information effectively and can evaluate different views to arrive at solutions. You know and anticipate stakeholder needs.
You are motivated to contribute to the ECB’s mission, to serve the citizens of the EU as a member of a public institution and to work with colleagues from all over Europe.
You are motivated to be part of our team and to develop and use your skills and competencies to achieve the aims of this position.
Working modalities
We offer internationally competitive salaries and allowances. Taxes on salaries, allowances and benefits are paid to the European Communities instead of the national tax authorities. This position is allocated to salary band F/G, bracket 3 (see
What we offer, including the net salary table).
We would be happy to discuss a part-time arrangement for this role.
