Your team

You will be part of the analytics team of the Directorate General Communication’s Language Services Division. Deeply embedded in the ECB’s communication activities, our Division provides the ECB with linguistic expertise and support in the official languages of the EU, in close collaboration with the national central banks and national supervisory authorities. With over 100 staff members and more than 200 external contractors, our Division comprises four sections and a number of support teams.

In your role as a PhD trainee, you will be part of a team of six staff members responsible for preparing data reports and analyses to support data-driven operational management and strategic decision-making. You will work under the direct supervision of a team lead.

The ECB is an inclusive employer and we strive to reflect the diversity of the population we serve. We encourage you to apply irrespective of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or other characteristics.

Your role

As a PhD trainee, you will:
  • use and feed our Division’s business intelligence system;
  • use a set of internal IT tools and data visualisation software (e.g. Tableau);
  • draft analyses and reports and present them to stakeholders;
  • follow existing internal procedures and help create new ones;
  • contribute to theoretical research and discussions;
  • shape the analyst profile in the team.

The position offers you excellent opportunities to familiarise yourself with state-of-the-art data technologies and data visualisation tools, and to deal with a broad range of operational data (on areas such as human resources, budget and contract management) in a complex and dynamic business environment. In addition, you will have the rewarding experience of contributing to the consolidation of a pioneering, highly motivated, multicultural and interdisciplinary team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on the lives of European citizens.

Qualifications, experience and skills

Essential:
  • a master’s degree in economics, finance, data science, business administration, communication or sociology and at least two years of PhD studies in one of these disciplines;
  • a sound understanding of key statistical concepts and chart types;
  • proven experience with reporting and analysing data;
  • proven experience with at least one data visualisation tool (e.g. Tableau, Power BI, Google Analytics, Visual Studio);
  • analytical and quantitative skills;
  • a good knowledge of the MS Office package;
  • an advanced (C1) command of English (in particular, sound drafting skills) and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Desired:
  • Basic knowledge of relevant programming languages (e.g. Python, SQL, C#, Javascript);
  • Exposure to production and service-oriented business processes.

You are curious and eager to learn, and want to further develop your ability to analyse complex information. You are keen to collaborate with others, pursue team goals and learn from other people’s diverse perspectives. You strive to know and anticipate stakeholder needs, and will signal any need for change and propose alternative solutions.

You are motivated to contribute to the ECB’s mission, to serve the citizens of the EU as a member of a public institution and to work with colleagues from all over Europe. You are keen to be part of our team and to use your skills and competencies to achieve the objectives of this position.
