Working time Full time

Place of work Frankfurt am Main, Germany

Closing date 14.11.2024

Your team

You will be part of the Language Services Division in the Directorate General Communications. We provide translation, editing, proofreading, and language technology and terminology services in all EU languages, as well as offering advice on linguistic matters. Our work covers a wide range of texts aimed at experts and the general public alike, including multilingual content for our website, and seeks to make the ECB’s operations accessible to a variety of different audiences.

In your role as a French translator, you will join a small team of in-house French translators who, together with the translators of other languages (and supported by external translators), are responsible for communicating the ECB’s messages to almost 350 million Europeans who do not have English as their first language. You will help to produce ECB communications in French (translating from English into French on the basis of the mother-tongue principle), working closely with other translators, language technologists/terminologists and our administrative team, as well as experts from across the ECB. You will work closely with others in our Directorate General as part of cross-divisional teams handling strategic communication projects or urgent tasks.

The ECB is an inclusive employer and we strive to reflect the diversity of the population we serve. We encourage you to apply irrespective of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or other characteristics.

Your role

As a French translator, you will:

  • translate texts from English into French (mother-tongue principle) in the fields of economics, finance, central banking and banking supervision;
  • revise and proofread texts written in French;
  • identify, extract and compile terminology in French;
  • work with state-of-the-art language technology tools, including machine translation, and maintain translation memories in French;
  • work collaboratively with other French translators to produce ECB’s communications in French in close teamwork;
  • contribute to the Language Services Division’s overall strategy by providing ideas, embracing innovation and being part of the evolution of the translation industry.

We are seeking candidates for this role who demonstrate the potential for growth, and we will support the selected candidate in their future development of the required skills.

This position offers you excellent opportunities to translate a wide range of text types for a variety of different audiences, apply clear language principles and develop a strong understanding of economics, finance, central banking and banking supervision. You will be part of a multicultural team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on the lives of European citizens.

Qualifications, experience and skills

Essential:

  • a master’s degree or equivalent in translation, modern languages or another relevant field (see How you can join us for details on degree equivalences);
  • in addition to the above, a minimum of two years’ experience as a professional translator working from English into French (on the basis of the mother-tongue principle) in fields relevant to the position (economics, finance, central banking or banking supervision);
  • experience of working with computer-assisted translation tools;
  • a native speaker-standard (C2) command of French and an advanced (C1) command of English, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Desired:

You engage collaboratively with others. You pursue team goals and learn willingly from other people’s diverse perspectives. You signal any need for change by explaining it and proposing alternative solutions. You analyse complex information effectively and can evaluate different views to arrive at solutions. You know and anticipate stakeholder needs.

You are motivated to contribute to the ECB’s mission, to serve the citizens of the EU as a member of a public institution and to work with colleagues from all over Europe.
You are motivated to be part of our team and to develop and use your skills and competencies to achieve the aims of this position.

Working modalities

To enable the Division to maintain its business continuity capability, you will occasionally be expected to perform work during non-standard working hours and work at the ECB’s standby sites.

We would be happy to discuss a part-time arrangement for this role.
