Your team
You will be part of the Sector Accounts and Fiscal Statistics Section, which is part of the External Statistics and Sector Accounts (ESSA) Division in the Directorate General Statistics (DG/S). The Section has around 18 staff and is primarily responsible for developing, compiling and disseminating the euro area accounts (financial and non-financial accounts by sector) and government finance statistics. It also collects, validates and disseminates the related data on EU Member States and other national account items (e.g. GDP). Finally, it provides user services for these domains and coordinates the ECB’s contribution towards further development and harmonisation of these statistics across the EU and in international fora.
Your work will be in the field of financial accounts statistics and will be closely linked to the other activities of the ESSA Division. We are currently working on several initiatives to develop new financial accounts products and are in the process of migrating to a new compilation system. You will work closely with the entire ESSA team, other DG/S teams, other ECB business areas, national central banks, Eurostat, national statistical offices and the international statistical community.
The ECB is an inclusive employer and we strive to reflect the diversity of the population we serve. We encourage you to apply irrespective of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or other characteristics.
Your role
As an Economist-Statistician you will:
- actively participate in compiling the euro area accounts;
- help implement the ECB’s medium-term strategy for financial accounts and its workstreams;
- engage in development projects which require the integration of granular data and macroeconomic statistics;
- contribute to methodological and conceptual work concerning the above-mentioned statistics;
- engage and collaborate with users of the ECB’s statistical data;
- work to enhance the processes and tools that are used to compile our statistics;
- contribute to meetings of the relevant European System of Central Banks (ESCB) working group and its sub-structures.
The position offers you excellent opportunities to apply and improve statistical methods and to work on datasets that are in development and in high demand. It also gives you the opportunity to collaborate with different stakeholders from DG/S, other ECB business areas, the ESCB and Eurostat. You will be part of a multicultural team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on the lives of European citizens.
Qualifications, experience and skills
Essential:
- a master’s degree or equivalent in statistics, economics, finance, business administration, mathematics, computer science or another relevant field (click here for details on degree equivalences);
- in addition to the above, at least three years of professional experience in the development, production and/or analysis of economic statistics;
- sound analytical skills and the ability to define, implement and apply statistical concepts, procedures and methodologies;
- an advanced knowledge of financial accounts and/or related statistics, such as government finance statistics or balance of payments data;
- experience in using statistical and/or mathematical software (e.g. Python, R), and/or manipulating large and complex datasets;
- the ability to explain and present complex technical issues to a variety of stakeholders and draft appropriate documentation;
- an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Desired:
- knowledge of European and international statistical standards and their practical application;
- knowledge of other statistics that are used to compile financial accounts as well as of the non-financial accounts.
You engage collaboratively with others. You pursue team goals and learn willingly from other people’s diverse perspectives. You signal any need for change by explaining it and proposing alternative solutions. You analyse complex information effectively and can evaluate different views to arrive at solutions. You know and anticipate stakeholder needs.
You are motivated to be part of our team and to use your skills and competencies to achieve the objectives of this position.
