Your team

You will be part of the International Policy Analysis Division in the Directorate General International and European Relations. Our Division has around 30 staff preparing policy positions, analysis and briefings on issues of systemic relevance for the global economy and for the international monetary and financial system. 

In your role as Economist, you will be part of a team of staff responsible for contributing analysis of commodity price, exchange rate and global capital market developments for the preparation of the Governing Council’s monetary policy meetings and the ECB/Eurosystem projections. Our team additionally provides input to the European Systemic Risk Board and the Directorate General Macroprudential Policy and Financial Stability regarding global risks to financial stability.

Your role

As an Economist you will:
  • contribute to the preparation of the Governing Council’s monetary policy meetings and the ECB/Eurosystem projections; 
  • conduct economic analysis and other analytical studies and develop tools in the Division’s areas of competence, particularly as regards exchange rates, commodity markets or international financial issues;
  • contribute to ECB publications and external communications.

Qualifications, experience and skills

Essential: 
  • a master’s degree or equivalent in economics or another relevant field (see How you can join us for details on degree equivalences);
  • in addition to the above, a minimum of three years’ professional experience in analysing global capital markets, global policy issues and/or international financial issues;
  • strong analytical skills, with experience in applied empirical work and in the application of econometric methods; 
  • the ability to combine policy-oriented and analytical work, with an understanding and awareness of policy issues and their implications; 
  • an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Desired: 
  • a PhD in economics, finance or another relevant field (see How you can join us for details on degree equivalences);
  • a sound understanding of macroeconomics and international financial markets;
  • experience in preparing policy-related material, both orally and in writing;
  • experience in coordinating analysis or policy work; 
  • a publication record in areas related to the Division’s fields of interest.

You know and anticipate stakeholder needs.

The contract offered will be short-term ESCB/IO, the appointment being for 12 months as of the exact starting date of the selected person, extendable to up to 36 months.
