Your team
You will be part of the Fit & Proper Division in the Directorate General SSM Governance & Operations. As part of this selection process, we may also establish an internal reserve list of candidates, who may be considered for similar positions across other ECB business areas in line with future organisational needs.
The Directorate General plays a key role in supporting European banking supervision. It ensures effective decision-making, evaluates banking licence requests and qualified shareholders, processes whistleblowing reports, handles enforcement and sanctioning proceedings and assesses the suitability of leaders in supervised institutions.
The Fit & Proper Division ensures that members of the management bodies and key function holders in Significant Institutions meet the highest standards of suitability. Working with national competent authorities and Joint Supervisory Teams, the Division assesses candidates’ experience, integrity and reputation and issues formal decisions on behalf of the ECB.
In your role as Analyst, you will contribute to these objectives by preparing supervisory assessments, evaluating leaders’ suitability, preparing proposals for draft decisions and fostering digitalisation and innovation. Your work will directly enhance collaboration across European banking supervision and promote a strong, unified supervisory culture.
The Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM) is the system of banking supervision in Europe. It comprises the ECB and the national supervisory authorities of the participating countries.
The ECB is an inclusive employer and we strive to reflect the diversity of the population we serve. We encourage you to apply irrespective of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or other characteristics.
Your role
As an Analyst in Horizontal Supervision, you will focus on the following broad tasks:
- establishing and maintaining regular contact with strategic partners, including ECB counterparts (JSTs, horizontal functions), national competent authorities, other supervisory bodies and authorities and external partners;
- support in the preparation of presentations and briefings for decision-makers, and contribute to cross-cutting analyses, thematic reviews, and benchmarking activities.
In the Fit & Proper Division specifically, you will:
- contribute to the preparation of risk-based fit and proper assessments of members of management bodies and key function holders of Significant Institutions;
- regularly preparing proposals for decisions by the ECB decision-making bodies;
- help develop horizontal analyses and policy stances to support the consistency and quality of the Division’s work;
- contribute to automation and communication efforts (internal and external) in the Division’s area of competence with a problem-solving, innovative and adaptive mindset;
- participate in various horizontal projects across the ECB (e.g. developing new policies and IT tools and simplifying processes) and contribute to knowledge management and knowledge-sharing initiatives within the Directorate General and beyond.
For this role we are seeking candidates who demonstrate the potential for growth, and we will support the selected candidate in their development of the required skills.
Qualifications, experience and skills
Essential:
- a bachelor’s degree or equivalent, preferably in law, economics, business administration, finance or another relevant field (see How you can join us for details on degree equivalences);
- in addition to the above, a minimum of one year’s relevant professional experience (other than as a trainee or intern) in banking supervision, financial regulation, financial stability, financial services, consulting, law or another advisory function in a supervisory or regulatory context;
- experience in working with multiple stakeholders, tasks or processes;
- drafting and presentation skills, and the ability to prepare presentations and briefings in a clear and concise way for diverse audiences;
- the ability to analyse data, reports and datasets and translate complex ideas and diverse perspectives into clear alternatives for informed decision-making;
- an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Desired:
- a master’s degree in a relevant field, such as law, economics, business administration, finance or another relevant field (see How you can join us for details on degree equivalences);
- experience and knowledge of European banking supervision;
- experience in process automation, innovative technologies and IT-related solutions, with a focus on developments and trends relevant to banking supervision;
- a strong interest in working in a multicultural environment or gaining experience abroad, as demonstrated through language skills, education, work experience or voluntary work.
You engage collaboratively with others. You pursue team goals and learn willingly from other people’s diverse perspectives. You signal any need for change by explaining it and proposing alternative solutions. You analyse complex information effectively and can evaluate different views to arrive at solutions. You know and anticipate stakeholder needs.
You are motivated to contribute to the ECB’s mission, to serve the citizens of the EU as a member of a public institution and to work with colleagues from all over Europe. You are motivated to be part of our team and to develop and use your skills and competencies to achieve the aims of this position.
Working modalities
Working for European banking supervision involves spending short periods of time abroad for on-site visits or training. This important part of our work is complemented by an environment in which well-being and a good work-life balance are fostered. Playing a role in European banking supervision also entails collaborating in multinational and multicultural teams and operating in the context of different national frameworks, for which a strong ability to use different EU languages for business purposes is an asset.
We would be happy to discuss a part-time arrangement for this role.
